Screenshot capture requires more than basic agent connectivity.
The agent may be online while the graphical desktop required for capture is unavailable.
Confirm the endpoint is online
First verify that the endpoint has recent heartbeat activity.
If the endpoint is offline, resolve connectivity before troubleshooting screen capture.
Confirm the screenshot job result
Open the associated job and review its returned status.
Determine whether the problem occurred because:
- the request never reached the endpoint
- the capture provider failed
- no graphical session was available
- permissions prevented capture
- the operation timed out
Windows
Windows services and interactive user sessions are separated.
The remFREE service itself should not be assumed to have direct access to every user's desktop.
Screenshot and remote-control functions may therefore depend on the appropriate interactive-session helper or capture provider.
Possible conditions include:
- no user session
- locked or changing session
- Remote Desktop session
- helper not running
- capture API failure
Linux
Linux graphical capture depends on the active display environment.
Relevant factors can include:
- X11
- Wayland
- display permissions
- active desktop session
- capture provider availability
An agent running successfully as a system service does not necessarily mean it automatically has permission to capture the active user's desktop.
Screenshot versus remote control
If screenshot capture fails and remote control also fails, the shared problem may be graphical-session access.
If screenshot capture works while remote control fails, investigate the WebRTC and remote-session path separately.
This comparison can be a useful diagnostic shortcut.
Review agent logs
Endpoint logs can reveal:
- display errors
- missing session information
- helper startup problems
- permission errors
- capture failures
Use the timestamp of the failed screenshot job to find the relevant log entries.
Do not repeatedly retry without diagnosis
Repeated screenshot requests will not repair a missing desktop session or permission problem.
Determine whether the failure is:
- connectivity
- graphical session
- permissions
- platform support
- capture provider
Then correct the appropriate layer.
