Job Is Stuck, Failed, or Never Completed

How to troubleshoot remFREE jobs that remain queued, fail during execution, or never return a result.

Troubleshooting Agent Troubleshooting Jobs Automation

remFREE uses jobs to coordinate many endpoint actions.

Examples include:

  • inventory collection
  • scripts
  • commands
  • screenshots
  • patch operations
  • other agent actions

When a job does not complete, its state can help identify where the workflow stopped.

Understand the basic lifecycle

A simplified job flow is:

Request created
      |
      v
   Queued
      |
      v
Sent to agent
      |
      v
  Executing
      |
      v
Completed or Failed

The exact states may vary by operation, but the principle remains the same.

Job remains queued

A job that remains queued may indicate that the endpoint has not received it yet.

Check:

  • whether the device is online
  • last heartbeat time
  • agent connectivity
  • WebSocket connectivity
  • whether another active operation conflicts with the request

An offline endpoint cannot immediately execute a new job.

Job reaches the agent but fails

This usually means the communication path worked but the endpoint operation itself failed.

Possible causes include:

  • unsupported operating system
  • insufficient permissions
  • missing executable or shell
  • invalid script
  • graphical session unavailable
  • Windows Update error
  • endpoint security software blocking the action
  • timeout

Read the returned error rather than treating every failed job as a connection problem.

Job appears to run forever

Some operations legitimately take longer than others.

A patch installation, for example, may take much longer than collecting a small status value.

However, an operation should not remain active indefinitely without explanation.

Check:

  • execution timeout
  • endpoint process state
  • agent logs
  • whether the requested command waits for user input
  • whether the endpoint disconnected during execution

Duplicate protection

Some remFREE workflows intentionally prevent duplicate active jobs.

For example, creating several identical update operations for one endpoint at the same time would usually make the system less reliable, not more.

If remFREE declines to create another operation, check whether equivalent work is already active.

Device went offline during the job

If an endpoint disconnects while executing work, the platform may not immediately receive the final result.

Investigate the endpoint and agent logs before retrying blindly.

Read the output

Job output is one of the most important troubleshooting sources in remFREE.

Look for:

  • exit code
  • returned text
  • error message
  • timestamps
  • execution duration

The device often tells you exactly why the operation failed.

Before retrying

Do not repeatedly click the same action without understanding the previous failure.

First determine:

  • Was the endpoint reachable?
  • Did the agent receive the job?
  • Did execution begin?
  • Was an error returned?
  • Is the previous operation still active?

A retry is useful after correcting the cause.

It is not a substitute for diagnosis.
