Deploying remFREE in a Zero-Trust Environment

How remFREE fits into security-conscious environments where network location alone is not treated as proof of trust.

Guide Security Networking Audit Zero Trust Architecture

remFREE was influenced by real operational work in environments where administrative access could not simply be granted because a machine happened to be connected to the network.

That experience shaped an important design principle:

Network presence is not identity.

A device being able to reach remFREE does not automatically make it a managed device.

A user being able to reach the login page does not automatically give that user access to an organization.

A connected endpoint does not automatically make every administrative action appropriate.

Establish trust deliberately

A new endpoint must first be enrolled.

Enrollment associates the device with the intended remFREE tenant and establishes the identity used for subsequent communication.

This is different from simply discovering an IP address and assuming the machine belongs to the organization.

Authenticate users separately

Administrative users authenticate through remFREE.

User identity, tenant membership, and authorization are different layers.

A useful mental model is:

Authentication
    Who are you?

Tenant membership
Which organization do you belong to?

Authorization
What are you allowed to do?

These questions should remain separate.

Avoid unnecessary inbound exposure

The remFREE agent initiates communication outward toward the remFREE platform.

That means the normal architecture does not require every managed workstation to expose a general-purpose inbound management listener.

This is especially useful in restricted networks where reducing exposed services is an important security objective.

Allow the smallest practical network path

A zero-trust environment should not solve application connectivity by allowing unrestricted outbound access.

The better approach is to permit the specific communication required for remFREE while preserving the organization's security controls.

The core remFREE service is:

https://rmm.remfree.com

Persistent agent communication uses:

wss://rmm.remfree.com/ws

Normal platform communication uses encrypted web protocols.

Inspect carefully

Some organizations use TLS inspection, outbound proxies, secure web gateways, or application-aware firewalls.

These controls can coexist with remFREE, but they must correctly support the communication being inspected.

A policy that works for ordinary web browsing may still interfere with:

  • long-lived WebSocket sessions
  • background service traffic
  • WebRTC
  • certificate validation

Least privilege applies to people too

Not every technician requires every administrative capability.

Tenant roles should reflect the work the person actually needs to perform.

Shared administrator credentials should be avoided because they weaken attribution.

Administrative actions should leave evidence

A secure management system should help answer:

  • who initiated an action
  • which endpoint was targeted
  • what operation was requested
  • whether it executed
  • what result was returned
  • whether the state changed afterward

This is why jobs, activity, audit history, and compliance evidence are important parts of remFREE.

Separate communication from execution

A connected agent does not mean every possible endpoint action is automatically allowed or possible.

Connectivity means the communication path exists.

Execution still depends on factors such as:

  • supported capability
  • endpoint permissions
  • operating-system behavior
  • active user session
  • configured policy

This separation prevents the word online from being confused with unrestricted administrative access.

Treat Unknown honestly

The same philosophy applies to compliance.

If remFREE cannot determine whether a requirement passes or fails, it may report Unknown.

That is preferable to manufacturing certainty that the evidence does not support.

Operational transparency

Security controls become easier to trust when administrators can understand what the system is doing.

remFREE therefore aims to make the major boundaries visible:

Browser
    |
    v
HTTPS application
    |
    v
Laravel policy and workflow
    |
    v
Go communication layer
    |
    v
Authenticated agent
    |
    v
Operating-system capability

Each boundary has a different responsibility.

The practical goal

Zero trust does not mean making systems impossible to operate.

It means reducing assumptions.

For remFREE, that means:

Identify users.

Enroll devices deliberately.

Keep tenants separated.

Use encrypted communication.

Avoid unnecessary inbound listeners.

Control privileged actions.

Preserve evidence.

That is the environment remFREE was designed to live in.
